This is a scaffolded activity in which the student is supported in developing their skill and knowledge for reflective practice and journal activity during weeks 1-11 of the course. The student’s ability to undertake reflective practice and journaling is assessed in a summative assessment in week 12 on Professional Experience Placement. 

Writing a reflective journal can help nurses develop critical thinking skills, which is an integral component in the nursing process. Reflective practice is the ability to examine one’s actions and experiences with the outcome of developing their practice, inter professional learning and enhancing clinical knowledge. Reflective practice affects all levels of nursing, from students, to advanced practice nursing students, as well as practicing nurses. It is also important to include reflection on the interaction that you had with multidisciplinary team members, client and family members. 

Reflective Practice Assessment  

Using Gibbs’ (1988) reflective cycle, students will write a reflective paper on identified clinical themes from their PEP experience. Students should discuss similarities or differences between this learning experience and their previous professional experience, they will examine the clinical theme/ issue or dilemma, describe the incident, identify ethical issues, explore feelings, evaluate, critically analyse, draw conclusions and develop an action plan. Students will have to consider duty of care, standards of practice, consent, negligence, communication issues. The reflection will help the student identify their personal and professional development, evaluate the experience, analyse the similarities or differences between current learning experience and previous experience. Students will draw conclusions and develop an action plan to enable them to set goals, keep on track and reflect on own progress. 

The students will present a 1500-word paper, that focuses on weekly themes is undertaken each week of placement. In this paper students will relate clinical themes/ issues or dilemmas, describe the incident, identify ethical issues, explore feelings, evaluate, critically analyse, draw conclusions, relate these to the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards of Practice (2016) and the multi-disciplinary health care environment to develop an action plan.

Week 2. Student should reflect on Medication Administration

Week 3. Student should reflect on Communication with the multidisciplinary team members, client and family members

Week 4. Student should reflect on Policies and Procedures for NMBA Registered Nurses Standards of Practice (2016) and NSQHS Standards of Practice.  

Week 5. Students should reflect on ethical dilemmas’ in the clinical area.

Week 6. Student should reflect on their own professional development.

General instructions for the assessment 

The reflective paper word limit is 1500 (plus or minus 20%). All words are calculated towards the word limit except for the cover page, title page, direct quotes, and end-text references. If you write less or more than this, penalties will apply.

  • Assessment will be written in academic reflective journal format with an introduction, body and conclusion . 

There is a minimum of 3 - 4 references required for each theme. References for this reflective journal   should be within 5 years of publication – unless it is sentinel work. Students required to use the APA referencing system.

Analysis: what sense can you make of the situation? 

NB This should be the main part of your assessment 

E.g. Compare theory and practice. Examine your dilemmas from the perspective of ethical theorists a deontologist versus utilitarian view. Do any of the ethical principles apply? Was there a duty of care and legal aspects was there an act or omission? e.g. related to consent any negligence? Underpin relevant information with evidence. 

What similarities or differences are there between this experience and other experiences? 

Think about what actually happened. 

E.g. Consider your professional code of conduct and ethical frameworks. Do any of the ethical principles conflict with each other related to this incident 

What choices did you make and what effect did they have? 

Qs Was there any harm? What were the consequences to the patient and or nurse? Civil or criminal? 

What have you learnt for the future related to ethical dilemmas, the application of ethical principles, theories, legal framework?

Formatting  

All written assignments must be formatted in APA style. 

According to the APA style manual this means that your assignment must have:

  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 point.
  • Page margins: One inch (2.54cm) from top, bottom, left and right side of each page.
  • Body text line spacing: Double-spaced.
  • Paragraph indentation: Indent the first line of each paragraph by one-half inch from the left margin. (Use your word processor’s Help feature for instructions on formatting paragraph indentation.)
