Assessment 2

Purpose

This assignment is designed to give you the experience of conducting your own piece of research. This involves:

  • identifying the result of a t-test in published literature and formulating a new experiment based on the existing finding,
  • operationalising variables for the required study design,
  • performing a statistical analysis and reporting and interpreting the results.

This assignment draws on materials from weeks 1-6 of the course, including online materials, lectures, and tutorials.

Your assignment should be written in a Word document that meets standard APA 7 formatting requirements, including (but not limited to) 12pt font and double line spacing.

Assignment Subsections

We encourage you to read this assignment guide in full before commencing your data analysis. Your assignment will contain three main sections, each of which should be clearly labelled with a heading. At the end of your assignment, you will need to include an appendix with relevant jamovi output.

(i) Experiment Formulation

  • Identify the result of a t-test in published psychological literature (include a screenshot)
  • Explain the t-test result and generate an idea for a follow-up study.

(ii) Variable Operationalisation

Identify variables in the unique dataset (provided to you) and explain the statistical test you will run.

(iii) Statistical Analysis and Results

  • Perform statistical analyses in jamovi (put analyses in appendix)
  • Generate at least one relevant figure in jamovi
  • Write an APA formatted results section
  • Provide a brief discussion and interpretation of the findings.

Assessment Requirements Brief Summary

Assessment 2 is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in conducting and reporting a psychological research study. The assessment integrates research design, statistical reasoning, and data analysis skills developed during Weeks 1–6 of the course.

The key requirements include:

  • Identifying a published psychological study that reports a t-test result
  • Interpreting the reported t-test finding and designing a follow-up experiment
  • Operationalising variables using a provided dataset
  • Selecting and justifying the appropriate statistical test
  • Conducting statistical analysis using jamovi
  • Reporting results in APA 7 format
  • Interpreting findings and discussing their implications

The assignment must be submitted as a Word document, formatted according to APA 7 standards, and include an appendix containing jamovi output.

Key Assessment Sections and Pointers

1. Experiment Formulation

  • Locate a published psychological study featuring a t-test
  • Include a screenshot of the original t-test result
  • Clearly explain what the t-test result shows
  • Propose a logical follow-up experiment based on the original finding

2. Variable Operationalisation

  • Identify independent and dependent variables from the provided dataset
  • Explain how each variable is operationalised
  • Justify the choice of statistical test for the study design

3. Statistical Analysis and Results

  • Conduct the required statistical tests using jamovi
  • Present all analysis outputs in the appendix
  • Create at least one relevant figure in jamovi
  • Write a complete APA-style results section
  • Provide a brief discussion interpreting the findings

Academic Mentor’s Step-by-Step Guidance Approach

Step 1: Understanding the Assignment Purpose

The mentor began by clarifying the overall objective of the assessment replicating and extending existing psychological research while demonstrating competence in statistical analysis and academic reporting.

Step 2: Identifying a Suitable Published Study

The student was guided to select a peer-reviewed psychological article that included a clear t-test result. The mentor explained how to interpret the statistical values (t, df, p-value) and why the result was suitable for extension.

Step 3: Developing the Follow-Up Experiment

The mentor helped the student translate the original finding into a new experimental idea, ensuring it was theoretically grounded and methodologically sound.

Step 4: Operationalising Variables

Using the provided dataset, the mentor assisted in identifying relevant variables and clearly defining how they represented the constructs of interest. Emphasis was placed on matching the variables to the proposed research question.

Step 5: Selecting and Performing Statistical Analysis

The mentor provided guidance on choosing the correct statistical test and demonstrated how to run the analysis in jamovi. All outputs were correctly labelled and prepared for inclusion in the appendix.

Step 6: Reporting Results in APA Format

The mentor supported the student in writing a concise APA-formatted results section, including statistical values, figures, and interpretation aligned with reporting standards.

Step 7: Interpreting and Discussing Findings

Finally, the mentor guided the student in writing a brief discussion that linked results back to the research question and original study, highlighting implications and limitations.

Outcome Achieved

  • A well-structured research assignment meeting all stated requirements
  • Correct identification and interpretation of a published t-test
  • A logically developed follow-up experimental design
  • Accurate variable operationalisation and statistical testing
  • Clear APA-formatted results with supporting figures
  • A concise and meaningful interpretation of findings

Learning Objectives Covered

  • Understanding and interpreting inferential statistics (t-tests)
  • Research design and experimental formulation
  • Variable operationalisation and test selection
  • Practical data analysis using jamovi
  • APA-style academic writing and reporting
  • Critical interpretation of statistical findings
  • Application of theoretical knowledge to empirical research
