The objective of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to design a complete, fully functional mechanical system and its corresponding manufacturing drawings.

3.Assessment Brief
For the purpose of this assignment, it is proposed that a medium sized gearbox (two stage minimum) be designed to transmit rotary motion at a single ratio from the source, normally an electric motor or engine of some kind to the application, a device that may be chosen from one of the following categories or indeed from any sub-division therein.
•Industrial (machine tools)
•Automotive (cars, buses etc.)
•Marine (ships and boats)
•Power generation
•Military (vehicles and weaponry etc.)
•Domestic Appliances (washing, cleaning etc.)
Gearbox design detail requirements:
For this assignment you must describe in full your concept of the gearbox along with its intended purpose and a complete specification of the finished product. At the outset a complete description should be written with mention of the key attributes needed to produce a unit that is fit for purpose.The gearbox must then be designed to your specification using Solidworks to produce 3D solid models of the gearbox components, sub-assemblies and a full assembly of your complete gearbox.Also using Solidworks you must then produce 2D manufacturing drawings each with sufficient detail to enable successful manufacture of the components ensuring that they are fit for purpose.

Your description of the initial design criteria for the envisaged unit should include:
•Application- describe in full the intended purpose
•Physical attributes – Materials used, Dimensions, Mass, Weight etc.
•Input and output criteria – power and speed characteristics, torque, ratio(s),etc
•Limitations – Maximum speed, Maximum loading etc:
•Service information – Lubrication, Duty Cycle, Maintenance, expected life  etc.
