Yowie Sightings
Police were called earlier today to a remote area in the northern part of the Barrington Tops State Forest where it was alleged that two members of the public caught sight of and photographed, what they thought was a Yowie. Marie and Robert White were camping close to the area where the creature was seen and described what they saw as a large upright gorilla taller than a large man.
It looked straight at us but didn’t stop” stated Mr White.” It ran away when the shutter of the camera made a noise” added Mrs White. When questioned about whether they were frightened or not, both replied that they didn’t feel scared until they checked the camera and realised what they had photographed. The photo above was presented to Police following the alleged sighting and has been submitted to the CSIRO for authentication. The most recent Yowie sighting was in 19 th May 2011 near Grafton when a Hunter Valley man named Dean, who did not wish to be identified further, thinks he may have caught a glimpse of one of the creatures. According to Paul Cropper, an expert in the creatures “Theories abound as to what yowies could be, including an unknown species of ape or even an undiscovered close relative to homo sapiens....One thing you can say with absolute certainty is that Aborigines and Europeans have been recording these things for a long time – the Aboriginal stories go back to the Dreamtime and the European stories go back to basically the first settlement ... there's just this consistent thread of stories up until Tuesday morning,” he said. Anyone in the Clarence Valley who has had a similar experience can contact Mr Cropper, in confidence
A person’s arm span is usually equal to their height. Is this the case for you? Express the ratio of height to armspan in the form 1:n to make comment. Are there any ratios of body measurements which you were already aware? Have these been proven by the data that you gathered about yourself? Discuss.
Look for other relationships in your measurements. Find the ratios and the scale factor by calculation.
Using the ratios/ proportions and scale factors from your human data and what you know about the Yowie’s foot length, identify the other measurements for the Yowie and record them on the table above.
What might the stride length of the Yowie be if he were walking?
The scientists re-measured the footprint and found that it was actually 44cm long. What difference would this 1cm make to the height? Is this error is large enough to be important
What mathematics did you need to know in order to complete this investigation? What mathematical language was used?
