We are now very much linked into a global commodity chain. For your doing geography assignment you asked to consider how we as individuals participate in the global flow of commodities and how brands, intellectual property, places and production are connected by considering the geographies of what your wearing to class  and what you’ve brought with you to class today (November 30, 2020). Step one: Personal Item Data Collection:

Almost all the things we own possess a label, tag, or means of recording where it was made; for this assignment you are asked to fill out a spreadsheet recording the country of manufacture information for your clothing and items are wearing or brought to class this morning. Take note not only of the country but also of the geographic region of the world you item was manufactured in.

You are also asked to add the company or brand of the item to your dataset and research the manufacturing company, and whether it is owned by another company, and if so, where that parent company is headquartered; use the information to determine if that company is a national company or a multinational company.

Step 2: Country data collection

For this step you’ll need to collect information about the population size of the country of manufacture as well average hourly wage in that country from the OECD and Human Development index ranking. Enter this data in your datasheet. Next, you’ll be asked to fill information about your purchasing power, such as where did your wages for the items come from (your labour) and how many hours of labour did your ‘look’ require from you?  You’ll be asked to use this information in combination with some consideration of Purchasing Power Parity in your discussion.
