Group Debate and Submission of The Reference List.

The Purpose of this Assessment is to provide an opportunity for students to learn how to work closely in groups to debate and demonstrate the application of analytical and reasoning skills when caring for people with chronic illness in the community and/or in clinical contexts of care.

Instructions:

In a group of 4 students, you are to record your debate together on your chosen topic (see below) using Microsoft Teams. Each speaker must present their arguments in no less than 4 minutes and no more than 5 minutes – with an overall group recording time of 16-20 minutes

Debate Topics to choose from:

• Palliative care should be introduced at the point of diagnosis of a chronic illness

A debate is a method of formally presenting an argument in a disciplined manner. Two students will take the affirmative side of the debate, and the other two students will take the negative side. The debate should be presented as follows and follow the marking rubric to develop the arguments and presentation

Speaker One Introduction and Affirmative: Introduce the topic and the key points from both sides to be covered in the debate. This also must include the significance of this topic, and why it is relevant in Australia today. The speaker will then present the first affirmative viewpoints with supporting evidence (4-5 minutes).

Speaker Two Negative: Rebut speaker one’s viewpoints with supporting evidence, and then provide an argument from the negative viewpoint with new supporting evidence (4-5 minutes).

Speaker Three Affirmative: Rebut the negative viewpoints of speaker two with supporting evidence, and then present further affirmative viewpoints with new supporting evidence (discussion points must be different to speaker one) (4-5 minutes).

Speaker Four Negative and Conclusion: Rebuttal of speaker three’s viewpoints with supporting evidence, then provide new negative viewpoints with new supporting evidence (discussion points must be different from speaker two). Lastly, provide an overall summary of all discussion points from both the affirmative and negative debaters (4-5 minutes).
