Highlights
Aim
The aim of this literature review assignment is to provide postgraduate students with an opportunity to develop their research skills in the field of applied computing. By choosing their own topic and conducting a comprehensive review of the relevant literature, students will gain a deeper understanding of the current state of research in their chosen area, including the major theories, methodologies, and findings. Through this assignment, students will also learn how to critically analyze and synthesize research literature, identify key research gaps and questions, and provide an overview of the most significant and relevant studies in their area of interest. Additionally, this assignment will help students to develop their skills in presenting their work, both in written and oral forms, and conducting discussions on the topic. Students are expected to use IEEE referencing style to cite the sources used in their literature review. Ultimately, this literature review assignment will equip students with the necessary skills to conduct original research and contribute to the field of applied computing.
Tasks
Consider the research focus (topic and application) that you used for the first assignment and follow the instruction below to prepare your report and presentation.
1. Describe your findings from the first assignment by discussing the importance of the chosen research topic and the impacts of the chosen application. You may include this discussion in the introduction part. This discussion should determine the scope of the literature review.
2. Search for relevant literature: use academic search engines like Google Scholar, databases like Science Direct, IEEEXplore and ACM Digital Library, or research social media websites like Research Gate to identify relevant research articles, conferences, papers and books.
3. Read and analyse the literature: once you have identified relevant literature, read and analyse each article carefully. Take notes on key findings, methods, and conclusions, and organise them by theme or topic.
4. Synthesise the literature: once you have read and analysed the literature, synthesise the information by identifying trends, patterns and gaps in the research. This will help you to narrow down your focus further and identify key research gaps/questions. Use the model we discussed in class to guide your literature review. This model will help you to systematically identify, evaluate, and select the most appropriate approaches,
challenges, and methods for your research. By evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the selected methods, you will be able to identify research gaps and make informed decisions about what to include in your review.
5. Write the literature review: Use your notes and analysis to write your literature review. Start with an introduction that provides context for your work, followed by describing the main findings which may include several sections.
6. Conclude your literature review: Outline the main findings and showing the direction for future research proposals.
7. Revise and edit: once you have written your first draft, revise and edit it to ensure that it is clear, concise, and well-organised. Make sure that you have cited a; sources properly and that your writing is free of errors.
8. Use IEEE format for the bibliography.
9. [Optional] Prepare a presentation: Prepare a short (5-7 minutes) PowerPoint presentation from your report. Record your presentation with VoiceOver narration in PowerPoint.
