Background for Question 1

Some commentators have suggested that after the first seven games of the 2024 AFL season (ending Sunday 28 ^th April), the competition is very uneven compared with other seasons, with Geelong being unbeaten, and North Melbourne winless. Please see below the 2024 AFL ladder after the first seven games.

Question 1

1. Using results from the first seven games of the AFL 2024 season, calculate the ASD/ISD ratio over that period.

2. Briefly explain what the 2024 ASD coefficient you calculated means.

3. Briefly explain what the 2024 ISD coefficient you calculated means.

4. Briefly explain what the 2024 ASD/ISD ratio you calculated means.

5. Looking at the ASD/ISD ratio for 2023 AFL season, briefly explain whether you think those commentators are right or wrong.

Background for Question 2:

For the purposes of this question using the two-team league model, assume:

• In the English Premier League, Sky Sports, TNT Sports and the BBC bid more for a further four-year contract beginning in 2025 for the TV broadcast rights to the EPL which shares the increase in broadcast rights revenue equally amongst all the EPL clubs.
• One team is Manchester City, 81% owned by a UAE-based private equity company, is located in a large revenue market, and is a profit-maximiser.
• The other team is Luton Town, supporter-owned, is located in a small revenue market, and is a win-maximiser.
• All players are free agents, there are no labour market interventions.

Question 2

3. The MR or AR curve of Manchester City.
