The Industrial Control System presented in the following figure is used to control the distribution of electric power for a large part of a city. PLC 1 and PLC 2 control the various actuators in the Grid based on data they collect from deployed sensors. The HMI is used for visualisation purposes. The Control Network is connected to the Corporate Network to allow easy access to the system's status from the management office. The Corporate Network is in turn connected to the Internet to allow easy remote access from external engineers to the system (mainly for maintenance reasons).

The management determines that: for the sensor data being acquired by the PLCs, there is no potential impact from a loss of confidentiality, there is medium potential impact from a loss of integrity, and a high potential impact from a loss of availability; for the administrative information being processed in the Control Network, there is a high potential impact from a loss of confidentiality, a high potential impact from a loss of integrity, and a low potential impact from a loss of availability.
