Assignment Task
Your proposal should:
- 1) List a specific research question based on the topic you have chosen.
- 2) Explain the context the context of your research question. This includes both the historical context (what are the events, people, ideas, etc. relevant to your topic?) and the historiographical context (what has and hasn’t been written about your topic by historians? Is research on this topic part of a wider field of research? What historical debates there on this topic?).
- 3) Provide an overview of the sources you have identified for this topic. You are not expected to have read all of these sources fully, but you should have a clear understanding of how you plan to use them in your research for the final essay (EG, you might explain that a book you’ve found can provide contextual information about women’s experiences of the Great Depression, which will allow you to better analyse your primary sources about one woman’s experience of the Depression). You should mention both primary and secondary sources. If you have struggled to find primary sources, you can explain your research process so far and I will try to make suggestions. Any problems or limitations of your sources should be noted here (EG, you’re researching women in 1840s Sydney but can only find sources written by men about women). You don’t need to list every source you’ve found so far. Focus on the main sources that you think will be the most important for your research.
- 4) Explain how you intend to approach the final essay. Is there a particular method you’ll be using (EG, using the experience of one Chinese migrant in 1890s Sydney as a case study to examine wider anti-Chinese sentiment in Australia at that time)? What argument do you think your sources will allow you to make?
- 5) Explain the wider significance of your research project. Your essay will examine a specific moment, place, or person in Australian history, but why does this moment, place, or person matter? What does it reveal about wider patterns, processes, or experiences in Australian history?
- 6) An illustrative bibliography (not included in the word count). For this assessment only, it isn’t necessary to have read every source in your bibliography. The main function of this bibliography is to provide a list of all the sources you have identified as relevant to your research project.
- Note: Both first person (EG, “I think this source could reveal…”) and subheadings (i.e., to break your proposal down into ‘Question’, ‘Context’, ‘Sources’, ‘Approach’, and ‘Significance’) are perfectly acceptable for this assessment. You are welcome to use them, but they are not compulsory.
- Task Rationale:
- This assignment is intended to further assess and develop your research skills and to provide an opportunity to receive feedback on your research before submitting the final essay.
- You are expected to focus on a specific topic and frame a specific research question, undertake primary and secondary research, begin thinking about how your research can be used to make a broader historical argument, and begin thinking about the wider significance of your topic.
- Referencing:
- You should follow the History Style Guide (2019) conventions. I don’t expect perfection in referencing, but I do expect you to put effort into getting it right. You are welcome to ask me as many questions as you need, either in tutorials, during consultation meetings, or via email.
