Highlights
1. The exploring strategy model requires understanding the strategic position of an organisation (context), assessing strategic choices for the future (content) and managing strategy in action (process). Each of these play a fundamental role in identifying strategic issues (Johnson et al., 2011, p.15).
Assume the role of a strategist for any organisation of your choice operating in South Africa. Apply the exploring strategy model to the company and evaluate the current strategic position of the company, possible strategic choices, and proposed strategy in action for competitive advantage. Make recommendations to management on areas of improvements to be made in future. Give examples where possible.
Begin your answer with a brief context of the organisation, its business, target market, current situation and so on – just a short paragraph.
2. Your organisation wants to use a strategic consultant to help you in developing the organisation’s strategy. The rest of your team is unsure what the role of the strategic consultant will be, and whether that person could be held responsible for the failure of strategy implementation.
To help your team understand, critically discuss the roles of strategic (external) consultants, and explain whether consulting firms could be held responsible for the failure of strategy implementation. In addition, be sure to discuss ways to improve the outcomes of strategy development using a consulting firm. Rubric sans internal marks to go here for students once edited
3. A strategic leader is a person who has been identified by the organisation for the capabilities they possess to direct and co-ordinate the strategic development process. They also often determine the need for strategy development and take initiative in this regard, and are considered the pioneers of strategy development (Johnson et al., 2011, p.400).
Your organisation is going through a transformation. You have been identified to deliver training on the role of strategic leaders to the leaders of your organisation as part of capacity building. Critically discuss any four roles played by strategic leaders that the leaders of your organisation can adopt for competitive advantage. Discuss some advantages of each role and provide examples where applicable.
4. The strategy consultant is very pleased with the strategy you have developed and suggests that you and your team evaluate it periodically. Discuss the importance of evaluating strategy. Also discuss the SAFE criteria that can be used to evaluate your new strategy.
