STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Graduate Certificate - International Business Management
Working as an Industrial Technologist at the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade for over 14 years has made me realize that current business organizations demand multi-skilled individuals with all round qualifications in different sectors like business, finance, banking, management and marketing to keep pace with the competition and tackle the economic crisis; and they also require top management with premier knowledge and in all these key areas- to win the challenge of contemporary organizations. As globalization of trading and financial activities continues to grow in my company, I have decided to prepare myself with further expertise and new branches of knowledge that can enhance and develop my skills further with advanced competency and professionalism and earn me progressions of capabilities and for careers. This propelled me to pursue a graduate certificate in international business management at George Brown College.
The Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade is an Iranian government body responsible for the regulation and implementation of policies applicable to domestic and foreign trade and regulation and implementation of policies applicable to industrial, trade and mining sectors. While on this job, I have come to painfully observe how the country struggles to attract and gain international markets between countries. This is due to Iran’s economy being badly hurt due to the sanctions imposed on the country, after lifting of the sanctions since 2016, the Iranian economy has greatly benefited from this. Iran is the biggest new market to enter the global economy in over a decade, offering significant opportunities in most sectors, with potential to grow as the market in Iran expands. The Iranian government is currently keen to attract foreign investment, trade and technology transfer across the country.
Trade plays a vital role in the Iranian economy as its growth is mainly derived from oil exports. However, the current openness measured as total trade, i.e. import plus exports to the country’s GDP is hovering around 40% which is relatively low compared to neighboring countries, Iran has had the lowest trade to GDP ratio in the recent years. Regardless of this, this sector of the economy reflects its weak economic relations with the world, which could be due to both the international sanctions and lack of competitiveness. My desire is to bring about noticeable change in the Iranian industry and trade sector by fully exploring the knowledge of exports, imports and business management and fully expand on the insights that it provides to help foster trade in the Ministry of Industry Mine and Trade. This is my major motivation for taking up the graduate certificate in International Business Management from George Brown College in Canada. Upon completion of my studies, I have been promised a position in my company as the Manager of office for foreign industry and trade of Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade (my current employer) and I am confident that my strong English language skills having scored an overall Duolingo score of 110 will help me succeed on this program and help me achieve my set goal.
Iran has been isolated from the west with sanctions due to concerns over the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction for decades. These sanctions have negatively affected Iran’s economy and influence the value of total imports into the country. My goal is to take up the promotion in my current company as the Manager of office for foreign industry and trade. I intend upon assuming this position to attract and welcome international partners and I also hope to use the knowledge I would have acquired from George Brown College to build and develop strong international ties and trade freely with Europe, the United States and several countries who were once close trade partners with Iran.
WHY GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE AND WHY CANADA
Among the various countries with world class education that attract international students, Canada was currently ranked as the 9th largest economy in 2020 with a GDP of $1.64 trillion in USD. It’s large component of the economy was international trade, including exports and imports making about one-third of the GDP. This immediately influenced my decision to study in a country that excels in international trade. I am confident that I would be able to learn from the success of Canada’s trade and replicate the same in Iran.
The way my course is packaged in George Brown College has made it very appealing to me. The course is aimed at preparing students to learn and simplify the complex field of international business with dynamic and interactive teaching methods, including case analysis and guest speakers. This program also promises to adequately equip me with researching, analyzing, and developing a business strategy that will help companies support their trade initiatives towards the international market which will help penetrate and enter into business with international companies. I am enthusiastic about learning a business strategy to approach the international market because this is an aspect most Iranian businesses are ignorant about.
I am also looking forward to taking the course on international market entry strategies which promises to teach the international component of marketing entry, international sales, and marketing. This knowledge is essential to attract international businesses in Iran. Currently in Iran, businesses lack the knowledge of analyzing and developing marketing strategies to attract international markets. On this basis the international market coming into Iran is currently low. Upon completion of my studies, I intend to develop and present an international marketing plan and evaluate sales strategies that support Iran’s integrative trade initiatives.
Another course I am looking forward to is the International Business Speaker Series where different international business professionals are invited every week in a course where we can ask questions and gain practical knowledge. This would be very beneficial to me as I would gain knowledge from professionals about the real-life business world, ask questions and know how to solve international business problems would help me become an effective and enterprising manager in a knowledge based global economy. Therefore, technical skills are highly required working in an international business environment as it involves working with many cultures, negotiation, and culture theory to become an effective communicator across the globe.
Furthermore, the most exciting part of this course for me would be the capstone project which is a multi-disciplinary application real life marketing and business simulation that incorporates all the skills of all the other courses and helps sympathize and make business decisions. Upon completion of this course, I would gain experience working with a diverse team because with an international business environment, success depends on many people and the ability to work together will help with analytical skills. This would be very important to me, not only would I get the chance to learn how to better do things, but I would also have gained hands-on skills needed to be implemented in my company in work for in Iran upon my return.
PROSPECTS
Trade plays a significant role in Iran’s economy. According to trading economies, Iran’s economy relies primarily on oil and gas exports. However other sectors in this diversified economy still have the potential to contribute and grow the country’s GDP. Sectors like mining, industry etc. Currently Iran is focusing on the oil and gas sector. Upon significant growth in this sector, my aim is to recommend strategies to support principles of corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility and ethics associated with my company’s integrative trade initiatives and evaluate their effectiveness.
There is a huge need for international market presence in Iran to improve the trade and increase the country’s economy. I hope to use the knowledge I would have acquired from George Brown College in my capacity as the Manager of Office for Foreign Industry and Trade in my current company to stem the tide of these ravaging issues by creating business strategies, research in order to enter the international market. The opportunity to study in Canada to gain knowledge on international business management and bring the knowledge to the company I currently work for is a right step towards conducting an environmental scan to evaluate the impact of the world's issues on international business opportunities.
I have a very promising career prospect back home. There is so much I want to achieve upon returning to Iran after my studies in Canada. The steep decline of international partners and business has affected the Iranian economy and I intend to use my knowledge to develop and present an international business plan to support Iran’s integrative trade initiatives.
FINANCIAL CAPACITY AND FAMILY TIES
For the duration of my studies in Canada, I will be supporting myself financially as I have saved money from my job for the chance to study in Canada. I have earmarked a total sum of $78,373.68CAD and have paid $11,095 CAD as part of my tuition fees to reserve a spot in the international business management certificate at George Brown College. I own an apartment; the entire six parts of the premises located in Shiraz measuring an area of 87.72 square meters. This can be confirmed with the supporting documentation. This will be more than enough to support myself for the 9 months I will be studying in Canada
My whole family lives in Iran and I have a very established life there, however it will still be very hard to be away from them for that long. There is no doubt I will return after, as my mother lives in Shiraz and it is my responsibility to look after her as she grows older. Since the passing away of my father, we have been extremely close, and there's no way that I will look after her in the future. While I am gone, she will have the support of my siblings, however I will greatly anticipate my return to her. I am indebted to make my mother proud by returning to Iran to take on my promised promotion to the position of Manager of Office for Foreign Industry and Trade.
I have an enviable job that I cannot abandon, and my career prospects and future is bright in Iran once I am equipped with the knowledge in international business management. I do not have any family ties in Canada therefore I must return to my family in Iran. I therefore urge you to favorably consider my application as opportunity to study international business which will empower me in transforming the foreign market and trade sector in Iran.
