Assignment Task

BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Brief description of assessment task:

This assessment task requires students to conduct HVAC, water, and lift selection analysis for the specified project building.

This task assesses your achievement of the following Unit Learning Outcome(s):

ULO1: Understand thermal, visual, and aural environmental principles.

ULO3: Apply computational methods and software to make informed judgments in relation to their role as built environment professionals.

ULO4: Develop individual skills and expertise in order to contribute to team work.

ASSESSMENT TASK

The specified office building for this task is in Melbourne and has four levels above ground and a basement that serves as a car park. Details of the specified building are available in the “Assignment 2 Resources” on the unit site. The file is named “BASELINE CONCEPT DESIGN”. A minimum office space of 10m2 per person is suggested. You may have to make other reasonable assumptions. All reasonable assumptions made must be stated in the submission and where relevant, references supporting these assumptions should also be provided.

General Requirements

Your Assignment must include a cove page that introduces the project building and the task at hand. Please edit your assignment carefully so it looks very professional.

Using the baseline concept design, students are to complete the following tasks:

  1. HVAC:
    • Develop HVAC Zones for the four identical floors and indicate the on a floor plan.
    • Calculate the estimated Conditioning Load W/m2 and the Total Peak Load for this building, i.e., Cooling Load, Heating Load & Airflow requirements.
    • Select a System and determine its Size, Location and Floor Area consumed for this building. Note: this includes indicating the depth of your suspended ceiling – to be determined. Some equipment will not need to be placed in a plant room; however, others must be placed in a plant room. You need to determine the total area of plant room required, decide how many plant rooms you will provide and indicate their locations in your submission.
    • Locate the various components for your HVAC system and indicate these on a floor plan and in a building section. Show a schematic – in Floor Plan &/or Section of the HVAC equipment location and function. Show vertical shafts for return air and or water piping.
    • Indicate a fan air supply and exhaust system for your car park. Note: you might put some equipment on the roof, within zones, and in plant rooms. Show and label this - provide information that is clear and legible for indicating the concept function, area, size, and location of the equipment.

  1. LIFTS:
    • Estimate and justify the number of lifts required for this project (the project MUST have at least one lift)
    • Select appropriate lift(s) and their size, number, type of lift drive and spatial location for this project, as well as estimate areas for lift motor room, shaft, and access lobby layout (if needed). • Show an indication of the lift location on a floor plan. Label it. Indicate any other additional areas – lift plant room – if required in your lift selection.

C. WATER:

    • Estimate the amount of water usage for this building.
    • Estimate how much water can be collected on-site. Calculate a tank size for this water collection.
    • Locate and size space for storage and pumps for the water collection system.

Notes

The staircases, lift shafts (their sizes and location may be changed) and windows in the baseline concept design are just indicative and could also be changed as well as shading to the building provided (horizontally or vertically), removed or relocated.

You SHOULD NOT make changes to any of the following parameters:

    • Floor plate (external dimensions)
      • Building orientation
