Prepare a thermal simulation and artificial lighting assessment of a case study building 

Assignment objectives
The purpose of this assignment is to provide an understanding about the following principles:

The following NSCA performance criteria are being assessed as a part of this assignment:
PC28: Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project.

PC31: Be able to identify, analyse and integrate information relevant to environmental sustainability – such as energy and water consumption, resources depletion, waste, embodied carbon and carbon emissions – over the lifecycle of a project

PC33: Be able to investigate, coordinate and integrate sustainable environmental systems – including water, thermal, lighting and acoustics – into the conceptual design


Student Tasks and Deliverables

Prepare an individual (digital) illustrated 8 page A3 report that demonstrates knowledge of the principles of thermodynamics and thermal comfort parameters in the context of the selected case study building thermal simulation assessment task:

  1. Prepare a baseline thermal simulation of the proposed case study building using the supplied insulation, glazing and material specifications. Total R value calculations will be required to be completed for Floor, Wall and Floor building fabric assemblies.
  2. Suggest optimisations to the building envelope specification and evaluate the impact using the above thermal model as a baseline.
  3. Prepare alternative thermal simulations for the proposed case study building in two other different climate zones and discuss th results.
  4. Conduct a baseline artificial lighting assessment ( Using the ABCB lighting spreadsheet) of the proposed case study building using the supplied lighting specification
