I'm going to give you an outline of the story that I want you to write. You are to keep within the outline I give you. You are not allowed to write any story that you want, you must write the story according to the outline that I give you. Within the outline you will have lots of opportunity to be creative and tell an interesting story. Another way of saying outline is to say "situation" or "scenario." Situation or scenario means that I am going to give you the basic ingredients of the story.
Here is the outline (or situation or scenario or basic ingredients) for the story that you must write.
Two men are adrift on the ocean, in a small life raft, far from land. Their sailboat was sunk in a storm. They are in the tropics. It is hot. They are almost out of food and water. They have been in the life raft for seven days. One of the men is named Rajjan and the other is named Bashad. They are both about 35 years old. Rajjan broke his leg when the boat capsized and is in great pain. Bashad hit his head when the boat went down and thinks he may have suffered a concussion. They are friends, but the stress of being together in a tiny life raft with diminishing amounts of food and water is putting a severe strain on their friendship. They both know that there is only enough food and water left for a day. And they both know that only one of them is likely to survive. They are at the point where they are imagining ways of getting rid of the other guy. They are not getting along, to say the least. Bashad has a wife and two children. Rajjan is the sole support for his elderly mother and father.
That is the situation. Now here are my instructions for how I want you to write the story. Please read these instructions carefully.
1. DO NOT write a story with a "moral." This is not a story where good triumphs over evil or right wins out over wrong. Do not spend any time thinking about who should live and who should die. I am not interested in that. I repeat: THERE IS NO MORAL TO YOUR STORY.
2. You cannot change anything about the situation. They cannot be on a lake or have different names or anything else. You must stick exactly within what I have given you to work with.
3. No miracle can occur. Rajjan and Bashad cannot be miraculously saved in any way. No boat or helicopter or any other thing can come to their rescue.
4. Your story occurs over the period of a few minutes. I repeat: a few minutes. Not hours or days! A few minutes.
5. Your story must not jump into the future or go backwards in time. The only time in the story is the present.
