In soccer, there are three fundamental ways that a ball kicked towards the net does not generate a legitimate scoring chance:
(i) The shot is blocked by a defender
(ii) The shot misses the net
(iii) The shot strikes the goal frame (the post or the crossbar)
In the data, there is a variable named “outcome” that describes the result of the shot taken by an attacking player, with five possible results of the shot recorded:
(1) Defended (blocked by a defender)
(2) Goal
(3) Missed (the shot was not blocked by a defender, but missed the net entirely)
(4) Saved (the shot was not blocked by a player other than the goalkeeper, but was stopped from scoring by the goalkeeper)
(5) Woodwork (the shot struck the goalframe)
The data include a dummy variable called “ScoringChance” which is equal to one if the shot results in a goal or a save (we’ll call this a “scoring chance”), and zero if the shot was blocked by a defender, missed the net or struck the goalframe. Using this variable, the following questions will ask you to analyze the factors that affect the probability that a player will generate a scoring chance.
(a) Use a logit regression to estimate the following model that relates the degree of defensive pressure applied on a shot to the likelihood that a scoring chance is generated by the shot.
