1. Select a site and analyze it. Create a detailed description of the site, important features as well as a general breakdown of the area, its geography, climate, demographics and built form. You should describe challenges associated with the climate or weather including but not limited to seasonal flooding, sea level rise, harsh winds and storms, or drought. Finally, you should give an overview of the regional built forms and styles including both landmarks and some vernacular buildings. Include images of the site if possible.
2. Define the purpose of your building. Imagine that your building has a client with specific goals and a budget. Create a set of motivations for the client and a purpose for the building. Consider what building the client needs, whether they are interested in creating a residence, a workplace, or a place for entertainment such as a gallery, museum or theatre. Consider the constraints that your imaginary client introduces into the design. They could be interested in social trends like environmentalism or have other types of personal requirements. Respond to the client needs by determining the primary purpose of the building, any secondary purposes or possibilities, and a budget. Create a program. This is the list of spatial requirements you have based on the purpose of the building. The basic program of a house for example includes bedrooms, at a minimum one bathroom, a kitchen, dining room, den and a living room. The program of can be arranged in different ways in different room combinations. The essential program can be added to based on client needs. For example, the client may want a pool, guest house, an office, all programmatic items that are not essential to a basic functioning house.
3. Create drawings, plans and sections. As with the Pavilion Project, draw one of each of the following: a site plan, plan, section, and 3D or detail drawing. Build upon what you've learned in the Pavilion Project to consider multiple spaces including not only the main rooms in the building but the auxiliary rooms, like washrooms and storage rooms and how they are arranged and interact with each other. Reprise the idea of the parti drawing in bringing the program together by drawing the relationship between rooms and programmatic items. You may explore some alternatives to drawing in the form of sculpting and constructing parti concept models.
4. Define the materials and methods used. Consider choices of material and assembly in your design. Define the materials that are used in the construction of the building and defend your choices by describing their advantages. Describe how these materials are to be assembled into a building and the order and logic of the assembly. Reasons to choose a material can include but are not limited to cost effectiveness, beauty, materiality, availability, novelty, and environmental impact. Good material choices are supported by a good rationale.
5. Do a design comparison. Compare your design choices to selections from global body of architectural work. Determine influences or parallels between your work and other existing buildings and try to define its place within contemporary or historical trends of architectural practice. Pick at least two existing buildings and make a detailed comparison between them and your work.
