Research Report:
This case study will outline the nature and context of a design problem within the parking facilities at Western University Sydney (WSU) focusing mainly on the set design, implementation, management of the parking facilities at the Parramatta Campus. The amount of parking spaces at Western Sydney University isn& the problem. However, upon further reflection and research, the problem is the lack of parking bays that have been allocated for those that purchase yellow permits. Purchasing a yellow permit gives students access to general parking. It is evident that the yellow parking bay ratio to restricted orange and communal blue is not equal with yellow parking bays only available on the north side. There is a high demand for parking on the main Parramatta campus and due to the structural design, there is not sufficient parking provided for WSU students with yellow parking permits. Thus causing a major inconvenience to university students that they have to park at one campus and catch a shuttle bus to and for campuses. Although Western Sydney University students have been given shuttle buses to accommodate them, these buses are often full which means students then have to wait for another one. Henning 2015 states that “student motivation and quality of life, brings together the explicit elements that underpin learning in the higher education context, creating links between the effective and social aspects of the student life.” Thus meaning that in order for students to feel although they are receiving the best quality of education they must first feel a sense of motivation in the everyday events that take place. The design problem based on the intended design of the parking setting at WSU has seen that many WSU students lack the motivation to attend university and also more so than often find themselves late to classes.
