Learning Outcomes to be assessed
1)
To demonstrate the ability to manage, analyse and visualize spatial data and to critically evaluate the outcomes of GIS modelling operation in light of contemporary research.
2) Demonstrate critical awareness and advanced practical skills, using a variety of specialist software, in the areas of GIS.

Portfolio Assessment

GIS and remote sensing are modern and increasingly utilised technologies in the field of wildlife conservation. Two common uses are land cover classification, and fire monitoring and risk assessment. Lake Poyang, China and the Mahakam Delta, East Kalimantan, Indonesi are two regions which have experienced significant changes in land cover in the past few decades, largely due to anthropogenic factors. Reduction in water area in Lake Poyang, and mangrove area in the Mahakam Delta, have haddetrimental impacts upon the species reliant on these areas. The availability of historical and up-todate multispectral satellite imagery allows for these changes to be monitored and mitigation to be put into place. You will use Landsat imagery to perform two different types of land cover classification to identify changes in landcover in these two areas. The 2019-2020 bushfire season was a period of unusually intense bushfires in many parts of Australia. Hundreds of fires burned throughout the summer, mainly in the southeast of the country, with major fires peaking during December–January. The fires burned over 18.6 million hectares, causing oveAU$103 billion in property damages and economic losses and killing more than one billion animals, including around 8000 koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). You will use data on the fires between 2nd and 9th of January 2020, as picked up by the MODIS instrument onboard NASA’s Terra satellite, to explore spatial patterns. You will also use occurrence data from the Atlas of Living Australia to model the risk to Tasmanian Devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) from bushfires.

Potential risk to Tasmanian Devils from fires.
Your maps should include all standard features including (but not limited to): informative title, appropriate symbology, clear legend, scale bar(s), north arrow, coordinate system(s), location and/or inset map(s) where appropriate, figure captions. You will also carry out calculations to determine the area of different land cover types for maps a) andStep-by-step instructions and more detail on the required outputs are provided on the associated tutorial. Assessment Task Produce a portfolio which displays the GIS skills learned in Term 1, provides a critical appraisal of the software and tools used, and demonstrates understanding of the role of GIS in various aspects of wildlife conservation. The word count for this assessment is 3000 words (+/- 10%), excluding figures, tables, and references. Portfolio Introduction (approx. 200 words) Briefly introduce GIS and remote sensing as tools in wildlife conservation with reference to contemporary literature, and explain the topics that will be explored in the portfolio. Project 1 – Supervised and Unsupervised Classification Project Introduction (approx. 300 words) For both Lake Poyang and the Mahakam Delta, provide an introduction to the region, importance for wildlife and environmental management and anthropogenic threats and impacts with reference to the literature to frame the work. Method (approx. 200 words) Briefly outline the tools and processes used to create the maps. The method should either be written as prose or in the form of a workflow diagram – it should be in your own words and not a replication of the tutorial. Consider the reasoning for using certain tools/processes/symbology.
