In your essay you will need to address each of the following:
Review the main concepts/ findings in the literature in relation to your question
Analyse how well the evidence addresses the research question
Identify and describe the implications of this evidence for nursing/ midwifery practice
Recommend practice improvement opportunities
The literature review should include a minimum of eight references .
Cover page:
Include your name , your student ID , the word count , and your research question
Please include your student ID in the footer of every page
Background information relevant to your topic . For example, this might include statistics on how common the problem is, a short discussion of the implications of the problem, a short exploration of why it's relevant to nurses/midwives .
An introduction of your research question . This can be in the form of a statement, for example: This assignment will explore/discuss/evaluate/answer....
An overview of the main themes that will be discussed in your assignment
This will be your first main theme . Focus either on the 'biggest' theme or the one that logically comes first
Use a TEEL structure to help you format your paragraph, and make sure to open with a topic sentence
Include evidence that both supports and doesn't support your theme to demonstrate you've considered
Assessment 2 requires the student to conduct a literature review based on the practice improvement topic identified in Assessment 1. The review must analyse how well the existing evidence addresses the research question, explore implications for clinical practice, and recommend changes or enhancements that could improve practice. Students are encouraged to refine their research question and database searches using feedback from Assessment 1.
Review main concepts and findings in the literature relevant to the research question.
Analyse the strength of evidence in addressing the research question.
Identify and describe implications for nursing or midwifery practice.
Recommend practice improvement opportunities.
Include a minimum of eight references.
Suggested Structure:
Cover Page: Name, student ID, word count, research question; student ID in footer.
Introduction: Background information, relevance to nursing/midwifery, research question statement, and overview of main themes.
Body Paragraphs: TEEL structure (Topic sentence, Evidence, Explanation, Link) for each main theme, including supporting and non-supporting evidence.
The mentor guided the student to review feedback from Assessment 1 to refine the research question, ensuring it was specific, measurable, and clinically relevant. This helped focus the literature search and structured the essay around a clear objective.
The student was instructed to search multiple databases (e.g., CINAHL, PubMed) for relevant studies. The mentor demonstrated techniques for filtering high-quality, peer-reviewed sources and ensuring a balanced selection of evidence, including studies with both supporting and conflicting findings.
The mentor recommended using the suggested assignment format: Cover page, Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. Each body paragraph was planned around a key theme identified from the literature. The mentor emphasized using the TEEL structure to ensure clear and logical argumentation.
For each theme, the student was guided to evaluate how the evidence addressed the research question, noting strengths, limitations, and gaps. The mentor highlighted the importance of critical appraisal, not just summarising studies.
The mentor encouraged the student to link evidence to clinical implications. Recommendations for practice improvement were developed based on the literature, ensuring they were actionable and supported by evidence.
The mentor advised on writing a coherent introduction and conclusion, integrating themes, and maintaining academic writing standards. Proper referencing and formatting were emphasized to meet assessment criteria.
