Brief Context Description:
The children were enjoying outdoor play. Educator Ru came out to select six children for the second sitting for lunch; Ali and Child C were two who were selected. Ali entered the bathroom with the physical assistance of myself. He walked to the sink, turned on the tap and began getting his hands wet. Child C came and stood at the next sink. “Oap!” Ali said and took a step towards the soap dispenser. “I can help him!” Child C said, and waited for Ali to place hishand underneath before pushing the button. Ali returned to the sink and washed his hands with the soap. Child C did the same next to him. I held up my hands and asked “finished?” Ali said “no” and kept his hands under the water. “I’m finished!” Child C said and walked to the dryer. I repeated my actions and asked “finished?” and Ali responded non-verbally by turning off the tap. I assisted him to walk to the hand dryer. “I can help him,” Child C said again, and turned on the hand dryer. Ali proceeded to dry his hands, with Child C turning on the hand dryer each time after it went off. “In-essh-d” Ali said. “Let’s go to lunch” Child C said and walked beside myself and Ali to the front door of the classroom ready to go to lunch.
Modifications and Adaptations:
Ali needs physical assistance in the bathroom to fulfil the hand-washing routine, as he cannot hold one hand under the soap dispenser and press with the other hand – one hand needs to be holding on. The process is usually completed with other peers in the bathroom, but takes Ali longer so he is last to leave. Whenever the other children are present, they are a good resource for assisting Dominic, so he can rely more on peer support rather than adult support. When accompanying Ali at hand-washing, all educators have encouraged peer assistance, by asking them to do the soap button and turn on the dryer.
Analysis of How the Experience Contributed to Meeting the Outcome:
Hand-washing is a challenging task for Ali, as both hands are required for washing, and in the case of this centre, operating the soap dispenser and hand dryer,  which leaves him with no way to hold onto anything for support. The additional adult support around the hips is necessary in this situation to provide stability and ease concerns about balance, which can create uncontrolled muscle tightening (Werner, 2009). Hand-washing can happen up to five times a day, so this  can provide Ali with up to 10-minutes of standing time per day. Being part of a daily routine, this standing opportunity does not require any additional time  spent away from learning or peers. By participating in hand-washing sessions, Ali is starting to take control of his personal health and wellbeing (Outcome 3.2,  DEEWR, 2009). The daily routine helps Ali to become connected with his world and develop a sense of belonging to his peer group
Evaluation of Teaching Strategies:
The physical support of an adult is currently necessary when Ali is moving between the sink, soap dispenser and hand dryer. He is able to stand and support  himself the rest of the time, but needs to be monitored. Every hand-washing instance that has been accomplished has fulfilled these steps, and Ali is starting to  show signs of improvement in balance when reaching out for the soap.
Follow-Up:
The children are aware of Ali’ slimitations when he is crawling on the floor, but because he has not been standing or walking (with assistance) for long, they  are unsure. Continue to foster peer support in all standing situations, demonstrating and informing peers how they can help and/or include Dominic.
