Introduction
In a role as a Network Design Engineer, you are hired to design a wireless LAN deployment plan for a new three-story campus building which consists of different sizes of lecture theatres, staff offices, specialised labs, common study spaces and an open café area at the ground floor. Coverage and speed (data rate) are the two essential concerns raised by your customer (the university).
Tasks
You have the following 2 tasks to conduct:
1) You are required to propose a WLAN deployment plan for this building to meet the coverage and speed requirements provided by your customer. The design should follow professional practices. Your customer has provided the following design requirements:
a. Data Rate: minimum 100 Mbps/user.
b. Peak User Density: 100 users/story
c. Applications supported: video streaming/meetings, virtual classroom
d. Security: network security is essential
e. Costs: realistic deployment plan costs
In the report, you need to identify and justify the solutions that meet the above requirements.
2) After your deployment plan is implemented for a while, your customer reports that at peak hours of a day, the wireless connection in a few lecture theatres drops intermittently. It is suspected that the network performance deteriorates due to the increase in network scale, i.e., the number of wireless stations connected to the WLAN. You are required to use a network simulator OMNeT++ to investigate how the network scale affects the throughput performance. You need to simulate an 802.11n infrastructure BSS and examine how the network throughput varies against the network scale at different PHY data rates. The throughput recorded should be the average network throughput across multiple wireless stations over the simulation duration. You can assume that all stations have the same length of application packets to emphasize the impact of network scale on throughput. In the report you need to explain the simulation procedure, present the results, and discuss the reasons behind observations.
