Assignment Task
Assessment Details and Instructions
This task is a critical reflection. Critical reflection requires students to demonstrate how an individual's or group's learning experiences relate to the social work theories, concepts and models studied throughout this unit. Using the same case study from Assessment 1, students are asked to critically reflect on the client’s and/or their support networks experiences of disability and intersecting social issues. This is an opportunity for students to: compare those experiences to scholarly social work literature, reflect on what has been learnt about the disability and social work knowledge and skills being developed. It is appropriate to use the personal pronoun (“I”) since it is reflecting on your learning and/or your understanding of the experience of disability and social work.
Case Study.
Kayla is a seventeen (17) year old girl with autism who identifies culturally as a First Nations person. Kayla’s presentation of autism includes, seeking out solitude, being unaware of social cues, experiencing sensory overload and she has become highly skilled in the art of camouflaging her feelings and discomforts. Kayla and her family live in Redfern, a suburb of Sydney. She has just commenced year 12 at an NSW public high school. Kayla and her family are not currently receiving any support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as they are unaware of the system and its processes.Kayla loves cooking and is keen to further develop her food preparation and cooking skills. She is completing the High School Certificate (HSC) with a focus on Vocational Education & Training (VET) qualifications to further this goal. In spite of her impressive cognitive capacities, Kayla has no idea of her own talents, and neither does her family. Trapped in a social environment highly critical of what makes her unique, such as her unusual way of thinking, taste for solitude, and the intensity of her passions, Kayla is acutely aware that these are seen as shortcomings.Within the context of the group assessment, you are social workers at the Student Wellbeing Unit at Kayla’s high school and your role is to support Kayla and her family through the transition process to further VET qualifications. Further, your role is to investigate and assist Kayla with accessing the NDIS.
