Vision: The problem—aligning VMOS
I worked for a small not-for-profit indigenous organisation in remote community. Being a new company with 'out of the box' solutions to the indigenous challenge faced in their region, they were eager to start hooking in.
One of the biggest problems with organisations such as this, and definitely for this organisation, was the lack of knowlegeable management who had an understanding of the importance behind developing and implementing VMOS. Relying heavily on Govt funding to implement their 'solutions', it soon became apparent that VMOS needed to be developed to guide and inform their success strategies.This organisation came very close to closing its door as the skill sets simply were not there and lower level teams and individuals found that they had no direction or understanding of what they were actually meant to be achieving and how it should be achieved.Additionally, other than that the reporting back to govt about funding and project outcomes, there was no top level accountability or measurement.It took a number of years before this organisation was able to employ the skill set necessary for developing VMOS and feeding them down across all levels of the organisation.This organisation is now seen as a leader in the indigenous solution and whilst its vision and mission etc have not changed, their strategies for how they are implemented and measured have as the environment in which they operate continues to change, in particular depending on the approach govt takes.
