Consider the following scenario.

Scenario

You have accepted the role as Practice Manager for Healthy families, a large, busy, privately owned general practice. You are responsible for the smooth running of the practice, all compliance, and the management of four administrators, one of whom having only just started at Healthy Families, and four practitioners.

In the first weeks in the role, you realise that there are many issues facing the practice. There have been significant WHS concerns, and you are aware that there is a policy for WHS but no procedures and that the level of WHS knowledge is not great. With such a critical issue, it is important that you act promptly.

Task 1

Conduct a workplace risk assessment and recorded the results, including:

• Identifying hazards and potential hazards
• Risk assessment of each hazard identified
• Evaluation of policy/procedure in line with state/territory legislation and industry guidelines
• Development of risk controls and measures for the hazards identified

Task 2

Conduct the following consultative activities in line with legislative requirements with at least two fellow workers:

• Information session about workplace policies and procedures, including demonstration of personal protective equipment (PPE) where required for the job role
• Consultative discussion regarding outcomes of a workplace risk assessment from Task 1, including risk controls and measures developed as part of the risk assessment process

You will need to do the following:

• • Prepare an outline of what will be covered in the meeting.
  • Write a summary of the key points of WHS.
  • Outline how the team will used hazard identification and/or risk assessments.
  • Detail how the team will continue to be informed on WHS.
  • Provide at least two examples of communication methods, e.g. a poster. These can be created or from existing industry tools.
  • Outline your plan for coaching and support as required to ensure that individuals/teams are able to implement infection control practices.
  • Deal with issues raised through consultation, and ensure they are resolved promptly or referred to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Outline workplace procedures for dealing with infection control risks and hazardous events.
  • Detail how you will encourage employees to report infection risks and to improve infection control procedures.
