Scenario
Great Gourmet Co. operates a rapidly-growing group of city centre fast food outlets in London and the south-east of England. Having started as a single restaurant in south London, the business has expanded faster than expected in the London area and there are now thoughts about opening branches across the United Kingdom.
The group offers a wide range of food types, including burgers and baguettes, as well as dishes from Italian, Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisines. All prices are mid-range and the food is available either to take away or eat in. The interior design of each restaurant follows a uniform ultra-modern style and is particularly popular with young families. The business focuses on providing excellent quality food in attractive contemporary surroundings. The directors of the company have asked you to advise them on the possibility of moving into a wider market.
You have been given FOUR tasks to complete.
Task 1 – Macro-environment
Prepare a document for the directors that describes the context within which a business operates. This should include a description of the key factors that impact on the macro-environment.
Using your knowledge of the fast food industry, show how this process could be applied to a well-established company such as McDonalds. Present your findings in the form of a review document, using an appropriate set of headings. Your review document should include an analysis of how the operations of the business are influenced by each of the key factors identified above.
Task 2 – Micro-environment
Prepare a summary paper describing the processes involved in an analysis of the internal environment of the business. Your summary should include a description of the forces that are likely to influence this micro-environment.
Carry out an analysis on the effect of each of the forces on Great Gourmet Co and present your findings in the form of a single page memo for the directors.
Task 3 – Competitive advantage
Competition within the fast-food sector is extremely strong. The directors of Great Gourmet Co are keen to understand fully environmental factors that influence its operations and how they impact on Great Gourmet Co. They have asked you to prepare slides for a short presentation to inform them of the following:
Explain how Great Gourmet Co could use their understanding of macro- and micro-environment factors to achieve competitive advantage.
Assess how an organisation of your choice has used macro- and micro-environment factors to gain competitive advantage.
Task 4 – Strategies for globalization
Although Great Gourmet Co is only considering expansion within the United Kingdom at the present time, some of the directors are keen to understand the implications of trading on a global scale, should opportunities arise in the future. However, by their own admission, their knowledge of this area of business is limited.
In a memo to the directors, assess different ways that an organisation of your choice has responded to the needs of globalisation.
With reference to your assessment in the previous response, you are asked to explain the concept of globalization.
