Assignment Task

Note: The same plant cannot be presented twice.

The photographs of the chosen plants must be taken in situ in either a garden or paddock, i.e., potted plants or seedlings are not acceptable. The photographs should be of a standard that enables the specimen, specimen label and your student card to be clearly seen. Your student card must be partially covered by some part of the plant as a form of evidence that you took the photograph and that your student card was not inserted to an existing photograph (e.g., one sourced from the web). Each photograph (and associated label) should fit an A4 sized page in a word document

For each (major) toxin associated with the selected plants, describe its mode of action, the major organ(s) affected and the clinical signs to recognise a horse has been poisoned as well as any valid treatment strategies. All information relating to the toxins, clinical signs and treatments must be referenced. This information must be sourced from either text books or peer-reviewed scientific papers

In a separate section, develop and discuss management strategies for maintaining horses in paddocks and/or pasture to minimise or avoid toxicity from plants in general while still maintaining appropriate equine nutrition and horse welfare.
