  • To begin prewriting, jot down a few thoughts as to how you get your news and whether you think you are in a news bubble, in terms of relying on news outlets that lean liberal or conservative. If you are not even a casual consumer of news, write down your thoughts on why that is. What is it about “the news” that you find unappealing? What are the possible consequences of being completely unaware of the events taking place in the U.S. and internationally?

  • Scroll through either your Facebook or Twitter feed and write down the news sources listed. Determine the 3 most prominent news sources on your feed.

  • Research each news source on Media Bias/Fact Check (MB/FC). Note the rating of each source on the web site’s scale and the reasoning. Consider your reactions as you read these assessments.

  • Write a detailed analysis of the prominent sources you are exposed to. See below for more info.*

  • Use the Media Bias/Fact Check site to locate reliable sources that lean toward the opposite side of the spectrum and/or are listed on the least biased page. In terms of “opposite side of the spectrum,” choose sources that are left-centre or right-centre, rather than either extreme.

  • Select sources that you could potentially add to your news consumption that would provide a broader perspective than what is offered in your bubble. The key here is to find sources about which you feel confident.

Because this is a personal analysis, the first-person point of view is welcome when discussing the choices you make. Here is the structure for this essay:

1. Intro

Introduce us to the “Blue Feed, Red Feed” project from The Wall Street Journal. What did it intend to accomplish? What is striking about this project? Discuss your thoughts on your own news consumption or non-consumption (see the first bullet point above on pre-writing). 

This should lead in to your thesis statement: an overall assessment of your news bubble/consumption and how to change it. Be brief, one sentence only. Save the details for the body of the essay.

2. Analysis (3 paragraphs: 1 paragraph per source)

Provide an analysis for each of the three sources you will analyze, one source per paragraph. Each paragraph in this section should begin with the name of the source and how it is rated on the Media Bias/Fact Check web site. (Be sure to give credit to MB/FC for the rating.) If MB/FC’s critique focuses on the source as a whole, you may wish to look at the headlines for the day and how they are presented with the images. If the MB/FC critique singles out bias as it pertains to specific articles, be sure to focus on specific articles when you analyze the source.

Other options for analysis: Who wrote these articles? What are their credentials? How is the bias exposed? Are there think tanks, corporations, or private donors linked to these news sources? Who or what are they? How does this bias help validate your worldview? What is left out? How does this make you feel as you read it? Be as honest as possible. This is the heart of your analysis.

3. A proposal for change

Address the changes you’ll make to broaden your news consumption. Name specific sources and describe the rating of each on MB/FC. Go to the site and consider what is appealing in terms of what your current news bubble is missing. Tell readers how you will benefit from consuming news from these specific sites.

4. Conclusion 

Why should we all consider analyzing our news bubble and being aware of bias? How would our country or even our world benefit from this awareness? Is social media, for example, somehow at fault, or is the onus entirely on us? Let us know.

5. Works Cited

Cite specific articles you mention and the Media Bias web site. There is no need to cite each rating on MB/FC.
