Contextualising this assignment

The aim of this assessment task is to demonstrate your applied understanding of the theoretical constructs we are learning in this unit in relation to classroom teaching and learning. Using one of the hypothetical scenarios below, describe how you would support the students in this classroom to participate in regular learning activities, taking into account the information provided.

For Primary-Secondary students complete A ONLY. For Early Childhood students complete B ONLY

  1. (for Primary-Secondary students) The Situation

Imagine you are working in a school in a regional town similar to (say) Lismore, Gladstone, Grafton or Gympie. You are to choose a specific year-level for teaching a class in your curriculum area or KLA (e.g. Year 10 Science) or primary year level (Year 5/Stage 3), and respond to the following:

There are 27 students in your class comprising five students of Indigenous background, three students of Sudanese refugee background, and 19 students of Anglo background. There does not seem to be evidence of ethnic or racial tension in the class, but you have noticed that the class is nonetheless not socially cohesive, and you would like to improve this situation. The class is also mixed ability and one of the main issues you are having as a teacher is how to differentiate instruction in terms of engaging the majority of students. To support student learning and social development in this environment you are to identify how to scaffold for more social-oriented learning in the class, increase the students’ problem-solving skills, differentiate the learning for particular students or student groups to ensure that they understand the important concepts and ideas they need to know, and help them transfer their learning in order to encourage a life-long attitude toward learning.

Imagine you have planned a unit of work. Describe within the context of a lesson (e.g., Yr 10 Biology lesson or Yr 5 Science) how you will address each of these areas, being sure to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. Provide examples of the following in relation to the lesson or unit of work:

  1. Teaching strategies to teach important curriculum concepts to the students (e.g. chunking, stimulus options, scaffolding, developmental issues etc)
  2. How to apply appropriate problem-solving strategies to support student understanding and social skills learning. (e.g. constructivist approaches, guided discovery, PBL)
  3. How to appropriately apply differentiation to meet the various ability levels. (e.g. task modification, scaffolds, assessment options, universal design for learning UDL)
  4. How to assist the students to participate in group work and other social aspects of the classroom. (e.g. cooperative learning strategies, group roles)
  5. How to teach for transfer in a way that best integrates the multi-cultural elements of the class. (e.g. information processing model, long-term memory, Banks Multicultural model)
  1. (for Early Childhood students) Analysis of learning and development
  1. Read the Background Information for the child in the video on the Blackboard site for this assessment task noting the child’s age, the context of the situation: time of day, the setting, the people present and the child’s background information.
  2. Observe the video on the Blackboard site for this unit
  3. Document the key points of the video regarding:
    1. what the child/ren did and said;
    2. what the adult/s did and said;
    3. the physical learning environment- that is the context of the child and their family
  4. Evaluate the recorded observation regarding the child’s learning, interests, and competencies especially based on the following theories and the background information provided about the children:
    1. Theories relating to Social and Emotional development
    2. Ethological theories
    3. Context based theories

(you may find that other theories learnt earlier in the session are applicable- you may mention them too)

  1. Future Learning Possibilities: Suggest ideas for future teaching plans to support children’s learning and development.
