Case Study
Harry is 5 years old and currently in Kindergarten at a local centre. His parents separated when he was 4, so this is still relatively recent for him. His mother now parents him on her own due to the relationship breakdown and she works full time. Harry does not have any other siblings and does not see his father very often. Harry is above average for language and oral development and demonstrates complex language ability. His IQ was tested at the start of the year and returned a high result. There are many things he enjoys such as playing games and using his iPad (which he uses very often at home). Harry was born with Albinism with low vision and has recently been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. It is now Term 3, and the educators are finding Harry’s behaviour challenging. The setting is an average bustling and sometimes noisy room which is a trigger for Harry – it over stimulates him which leads to behavioural challenges. The lead educator does not believe that having the artificial lights on during the day is good for the environment, so they are always off and although there is some natural light that filters through the windows, they often have artwork placed on the glass. Educators keep Harry on the floor away from other children because he invades their personal space, for example, when the children are lining up, Harry touches them in excess. He is also very rough when he plays with his peers and one of the strategies the other children employ is to run away from him. Because of Harry’s vision impairment, he cannot see them which he finds very frustrating. To seek attention, he has begun to scare other children and is currently ‘banned’ from playing outside. When the class is at their desks/tables, Harry must sit away from the other children and faces a wall. The lead educators use the presence of the integration aide as an exclusionary tactic, thus deepening the social divide Harry has with his peers. Although the Prodigi tool has been used in the past for Harry, it is currently not functioning very well.
