Assessment tasks overview
Part-1
For this part of the assignment, the part you have to submit is a report on Creative learning, the arts and wellbeing and a proposal, which clearly explains what you are going to do and why.
Suggested paragraph foci
Identify and describe your setting and the context of your inquiry. (100-150 words) Define Well-being and how it is conceptualised in the curriculum and other department documents - The new Child Safe Standards for example (120-160 words).
Critique creative learning and opportunities for learning through the arts. Define what you understand about creative learning - what makes a learning experience creative? How do children learn through the arts? (120-160 words)
Proposal - outline what you intend to create and how you believe it can be used - note: you may create something that is either a provocation or simply a trial that no-one else sees but us!! OR you create something that is going to be used in practice - tell us in simple clear terms what your inquiry and worked example is and why. (100-150 words)
The development of an "Arts-based Unit of Inquiry" is in response to inquiry and inspiration from the seminars, readings, observations and personal research undertaken in the first part of unit. Consider this part as similar to a pitch. Be clear about whom it is for and what your aims are; know why and who supports you and be specific about how and what and why.
Make sure you define well-being and creative learning.
Part 2: (800- 1000 words equivalent) IMAGINE - Completing some worked examples as part of planning Pg. 130 - 131 in Dinham, 2016 Delivering Authentic Arts Education.
One of the most useful things that you can do as part of your planning - and later as part of your preparation for any practical lesson - is to undertake a worked example. In undertaking a worked example/s you have the opportunity to become the student and as such imagine new ways of doing something, explore these and trial how to solve issues; work through the processes you intend your students to complete. Even teachers who have been teaching for decades will undertake this work. I did this type of work when I constructed the SAMPLE SITE. A worked example for this unit might be a series of art explorations that lead to a book, or a story board for a media presentation, or a series of role plays or a series of improvisations that lead to a performance piece, or the exploration of some puppet types that you will use to tell stories and explore things, or a series of chord progressions and layers of sound that lead to a song. It is pretty open-ended.
We will work creatively with you each week to help you document and annotate your ideas, explorations and worked example/s. In the main, this will occur in the unit’s discussion space. We don’t have a lot of time so you will need to get going on this as soon as possible. We think you should be able to complete one annotated explorations/worked example and be able to explain how it will be used in the arts intervention or unit of inquiry. Again, these ideas are not fixed and you may change as the creative process unfolds in the second part of the unit. These are your imaginations and ideas; your creative solutions to teaching and learning creatively. This is part of undertaking the creative process for yourselves and being comfortable with not having the complete answer right NOW!!
You may have many worked examples that stem from creative ideas and solutions, or only one. One is all you need.
Part 3: (500 words equivalent) PLAN
When you are planning you will take account all of your ideas and thinking and then make some more formal plans. You won’t know exactly what is going to happen – we never do, but you can speculate given the information you have and provide an outline.
We will lead you through this process and help you form a plan that will outline how you will use the worked example/s and creative pedagogies and arts based strategies and approaches to achieve the intended outcomes. It would be great to have this ready for implementation in a real setting, but we will need to be flexible.
At this stage all we need is a SIX-POINTED STAR TEMPLATE and an outline of curriculum frameworks mapping - how is this unit of inquiry going to unfold and what are the experiences you are thinking of including? The Six points or prompts are the important thing - so just use the headings if the star thing does not work for you - we are flexible. Map to some framework or curriculum outcomes if you are able to. Just write this in a sentence or two.
REPORT & PROPOSAL
Part 1 PROPOSE Overview statement of your Unit of Inquiry /“arts intervention” which states what you know about a particular context, what you have learned about creative teaching and learning and the arts and how your Unit of inquiry is going to teach through the arts. (100 + 400 = 500 words)
Part 2 IMAGINE Documentation of creative process and ideas. Annotation of worked example/s. (800 -1000 word equivalent)
Part 3 PLAN A BRIEF speculative outline (SIX-POINTED STAR TEMPLATE) and curriculum alignment for your Unit of Inquiry (500 words)
