Assignment Task

Instructions/Details

The Draft Application Paper is just what it sounds like, the draft version of your Application Paper. The aim of the Draft Application Paper is to get you working on your Application Paper early, and to provide you with feedback on your work, so you know what you can improve and enhance the overall quality of your work.

To find details on the Case Study that will be used here in this Draft Applications Paper you need to go to "Assignments" or "Assessment Hub" and look at the details for "AE2b Case Study - Applications Paper".

Application papers require students to demonstrate and apply their knowledge of theoretical principles to real-world problems in essay format. Here, students will apply their knowledge of Physiological Psychology to the real-world scenario, specifically, a case study. This draft will be marked and students will be provided with feedback that they can act on before resubmitting the modified version as the applications paper proper.

The task requires students to write an essay style report to be read by both the patient and the referring GP. In words or less;

  • Identify and explain the problem that the patient is experiencing.

  • Suggest possible strategies that the patient could apply to this problem. Be sure to justify your recommendations based on your explanation of the problem and using psychological theory and research evidence.

  • Write in professional and objective tone, but in such a way as to help the patient make an informed decision about their situation and possible strategies.

  • Ensure anything your write is specific to the patient's situation and needs.

Tips for how to plan and write your essay can be found in the Module on "How to do an Assignment". There are also some more tips on the first page of Modules 3 and 4 in the "Assessments" section - these relate to resources that have been developed by flinders Student Learning Support Services (SLSS).

Scenario:
Leah is a first-year university student who is currently sitting in class, listening to her lecturer. She has a quiz during class. She is well prepared and rested. However, when Leah arrives at class, she becomes very aware of the sensation of her beating heart. She can feel her palms becoming sweaty as she reaches into her bag for a piece of paper. Leah looks up from her desk and can see the presented quiz questions clear as day but can't seem to focus on her mind on any one of them. She reads and re-reads but just can't make sense of the questions. No-one else seems to be showing any distress. As Leah tries to focus on the first question, all her thoughts centre on how stupid she is, how she is going to fail, and what a bad impact this will have on her career hopes.
