  • (b) Figure 1a and Figure 1b show a plan and elevation of a two story steel frame respectively. The first floor and roof of the structure are both concrete slabs supported by metal decking, all of which act compositely with the main structural steel beams.
  • (i) Explain, with the aid of sketches, how the loads are transmitted into the ground and how you will ensure stability of the entire structure. [10]
  • (ii) If the design unfactored superimposed live load for the first floor and roof are 5.0 kN/m2 and 1.5 kN/m2 respectively, undertake sufficient design check calculations  to EC3 for the grade S275 steel column C-1. State clearly any assumptions you have made in your appraisal.
