Assignment Task

Question 1:

Observe at your respective workplace or through literature survey on topic of your interest, formulate and solve an engineering problem using the concepts learned throughout this unit “Advanced Data Analysis”.

Example problems can be:

1. Finding relations between various process parameters for a chemical, metallurgical or heat treatment, manufacturing processes and conduct regression analysis for prediction of future values

2. Applying statistical distributions for freeway or highway vehicle transportation problems.

3. Applying descriptive statistics in quality control problems and maintaining the quality of manufactured parts within 6sigma level.

4. Other areas like environmental studies like air and or water pollution.

The above are just indicative topics, you are free to choose your own topic based on your research interest and literature review.

Question 2:

The Young’s modulus (Y) of a certain material measured at different temperatures (X) are given in the following table.

a) Make a scatter plot of the observed data.

b) Write the equation of best fitted line and estimate the young’s modulus at temperature of 1200oC. What is the slope and intercept of the line?

c) What is the 95% confidence interval estimate for the mean value of Y corresponding to X = 1200?

d) What value of temperature can be expected to produce a value of Young's modulus not less than 4300? Let ? = 0.05.

Question 3:

A study was conducted to evaluate the quantities and composition of residential solid waste generated in certain city at houses. The results of the preliminary survey are shown in the following Table.

a) What is the average waste generation per house?

b) What is the average waste generation rate (in kg per capita per day) and corresponding standard deviation?

It was also desired to check the correlation between the socio-economic categories to the waste generation. Socio-economic data for residents participating in the main sampling survey is given in table below:

The percentages of each socio-economic category are High income (13%); Middle income (70%); and Low income (17%).

c) Sort the residence numbers according to their income category. How many are in the high, middle- and low-income category?

d) The bar chart showing the average generation rate of solid waste for families with different income levels in the main survey is shown below:

Based on the given data, estimate the average generation rates of residential solid waste for different economic categories and calculate the weighted average generation rate for the city. Comment on the effect of socio-economic status on the waste generation based on the evidence of given data.

Question 4:

  1. Construct a boxplot of the data and comment on the nature of data.

  1. What is the type of distribution you observed?

  1. Calculate a two-sided 95% confidence interval for true average degree of polymerization.

  1. Does 435 a possible value for true average? Does 460 a possible value for true average?
