Highlights
Dietary Intake Data
1. Transfer your dietary intake data and complete Table 3 template.
2. For each food consumed, determine which food group the food belongs to, and how many serves of that food group were consumed. For example, a peanut butter sandwich with two slices of bread and two tablespoons of peanut butter would contain two serves of grain foods and two serves of meat and alternatives. When recording serves, please approximate to the closest ¼ serve. For example, 45 g of cornflakes would be 1.5 serves of grain foods.
3. Using the information available in Table 4, determine how much energy is contained in the serving size consumed and record this in Table 3.
4. Tally your results and record the total number of serves from each food group, and the total amount of energy consumed in the final row of Table 3.
5. Complete Table 5 by recording the number of serves consumed and the recommended number of serves per day (this can be calculated using the Average recommended number of serves calculator.
Estimate Energy Expenditure
1. Use the information collected in your physical activity record, and the energy cost of activities to complete Table 6. As you account for each 5-minute interval, cross it off your data sheet. The total time must total minutes (i.e., you must account for every minute of the day). Collate all like activities together in Table 6. For example, if you performed walking leisurely for minutes on seven different occasions during the day, you would group this together as minutes of walking leisurely. Note that the time in Table 6 should be recorded in hours, so minutes would be written.
2. Calculate the total estimated energy expenditure (EEE) from the 24-hour activity record and energy cost of activity, and record this in Table.
