SCENARIO
Hello, As you are aware by now, our new client Indigo Community Services and Health Hub recently experienced a cyber security incident. A workstation was infected by a variant of the Backdoor:Win32/Kelihos.F malware through a watering hole attack. It’s a bit of a mess, their network team are blaming the desktop team because the AV didn’t have a signature for this variant. The desktop team are blaming the network team because all they run is an SPI L3 firewall, no IDS/IPS or any kind of content examination. Management are blaming the whole IT department because it took so long to fix - no one would step up and take control of the incident and there wasn’t any policy around who should be doing what. Also, the malware was used as part of a botnet to attack Brian Krebs (again!) and it hit the papers so they are worried about negative PR exposure. You should know that employees at Indigo regularly have remote access to the network as they travel. They also routinely kiosks/cafes or have been known to use free wireless access.
