Assignment Task

Overview

This document outlines what is required for both assessment components for this module. It is long and contains a lot of detail which is there to help you. We suggest you read this on your own first and then discuss it in your Team.

The overall aim of the coursework is:

1. to give you an opportunity to identify the security challenges faced by an organisation and design well-fitting security solutions based on the capabilities and limitations of targets users and devices they use.

2. to give you experience in designing a security awareness training campaign.

3. to give you an opportunity to develop team working skills.

Please note that the intention is not to learn about and get the experience of full cyber security as that would be far too much for a 15-credit module. The aim is to provide a foundational understanding of the role of human factors in cyber security and how to design security solutions that are usable and acceptable to a range of human actors.

You will also get introduced to a broader perspective on socio-technical security that incorporates organisational and societal culture. Note: The first component of the module assessment is team-based work. It is designed in this way to ensure the team members can distribute the work, meet the deadlines, get to know each other, and develop team working skills. The second part is an individual report reflecting on given aspects of team working.

Assessment Component 1- Group Project Presentation + Report

For this part of the assessment, the students should work in teams. Each team must have a maximum of four students. The group project consists of two parts. In the first part, you will design a security solution for the Kale Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). You must design a set of security tasks that you believe can address the security issues faced by the organisation under consideration. In the second part, you will expand on the work you produced in the first part and explore the use of training and awareness techniques to design a campaign. a. Design a Security Solution For this part of the assessment, you must design a solution for the Kale VLE to secure it against cyber security threats and attacks. This use case scenario is about one of the systems that Keele IT Services team maintains, the Kale VLE. The security challenges faced by the Kale VLE are listed below:

1. Eavesdropping

2. Man in the Middle (MitM)

3. Ransomware

4. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)

5. Data Theft – Credentials, Usernames, and Passwords

6. Spoofing Attacks – Data, Identity and Location

7. Impersonation

8. Injection Attacks - Cross site scripting (XSS) and SQL Injections

9. Social Engineering Attacks – Phishing, Spear Phishing, Baiting, and Pretexting

10. Physical Theft - Devices and Network Equipment etc

Assessment Component 2 - Individual Report

In this part of the assessment, you will write a report to reflect on working in a team. Discuss how you find working in a team. What worked well in your team collaboration? What did not work well? What new lessons did you learn from the activity? Did you face any challenges and how can you overcome them in future? How would you overcome the challenges you faced if you encountered the same in the future? The individual report should cover the above-mentioned aspects with sufficient detail.
