Assignment Task

Overview

In this assessment, you will submit and present a conference style poster on an experimental design that could be used to answer your research question. Peer assessments will also be undertaken. This assessment is designed to provide you with a scientific conference-style experience, and you will present your poster in both written and oral form.

Assessment structure

For your abstract and blog, you will have already developed a research question and summarised the aims, background, hypotheses and experimental design for this question. You will need to expand on the experimental design, as a detailed methodology of how the experiments will be done is required. This information will be used to form the basis of your Poster, which you will submit and also present orally at ‘the conference’. In addition, you will peer assess other students poster/oral to test your ability to discriminate the quality of other students work.

Using Microsoft Powerpoint or similar software, create a visually appealing and informative poster (dimensions 0.9m x 1.2m). Use the following links to view some examples of scientific conference posters:

Peer Review

Some of your grade for Assessment 4 will come from your expertise in marking your peers. You will complete 3 reviews, and be awarded marks depending on how closely your assessment of your peers matches the grade given by your instructor. Only two of your reviews (the two that most closely match the instructor's mark) will count towards your grade.

As you watch the Poster Presentations, take notes on their content and delivery. It may help to use the Poster Rubric that your instructor will be using.

Please note, your assessment of your peers' work will not affect their grade. This part of the assessment is designed so that you can practice being the 'expert assessor', and more fully integrate what makes a good conference poster and presentation. It is good to be aware that while a student's assessment of their peers is often quite accurate when grading work of a high standard, it is often less accurate when assessing work of a lower standard. To avoid this, be as honest as you can. Your assessment of your peers is not seen by them, and is does not affect their grade - only yours!
