Purpose

The purpose of this assessment is to practise the execution of a research project and communication of research findings. The skills practised during the work on this assessment are not only invaluable for conducting research but also for being able to understand published research results and how they were derived. This is also an ideal opportunity for you to practise and develop the research writing skills that you will need in your work on the upcoming capstone course. The assessment builds on Assessment 2, and you are encouraged to use the research project you proposed for Assessment 2 as a starting point for Assessment 3. However, there is no requirement for these projects to be connected from an assessment point of view.

Task

Your task is to execute a small research project and submit a research paper detailing the research design, results, and interpretation. You are encouraged to use the study design and resources provided in Assessment 2 as the basis for your research paper, but there is no requirement to do so. If you choose not to, bear in mind that you will need to design the study you are going to do (though not write it up formally as a proposal).

Your research paper (report) should address the following:

  • What is the research project about? Page 2 of 8
  • Why is this topic important?
  • What background knowledge is needed to understand the research?
  • How does your research fit in with other researchers’ work?
  • What is your research question?
  • What data did you collect?
  • What data analysis workflow did you follow?
  • What did you find, therefore, what is the answer to your research question?
  • What is the potential impact of your work on an organisation, industry or field?
  • How would you present your work effectively to a stakeholder using media other than a written report?

Note that for this last point you are not required to create an oral or PowerPoint presentation or visuals for other media, just discuss this clearly and succinctly. You should pick a medium (one from, say, PowerPoint, Twitter, LinkedIn, newspaper, elevator pitch, etc.) and describe how to use that medium for effective communication of your result to a stakeholder (e.g. boss, organisation, general public, professional peer group, scientific community, etc.)
