Assessment 2: WHS RISK MANAGEMENT IN PRACTICE
Task 2.1 Hazards and risks
As part of the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Risk Management System you are developing for Builders2Go, you are to conduct a risk assessment of the company’s core on-site operations.
Analyse the work environment to identify hazards that relate to the core on-site operations. Observe a site under construction and consult with relevant stakeholders (where possible). Key information sources can include SWMS, surveys, audits, etc. You should come up with at least 10 (ten) areas that present risks to achieving the WHS objectives you set out in your Policy Document (Tasks 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3). The first 4 are allocated for you.
Analyse each area in relation to the following and complete the table prepared for you over the page:
a) Prioritised hazards specific to the organisation’s operations on-site
b) Compare current risk control options with standard industry controls
c) Workplace information and legislation (incl. from industry) that influenced your assessment
d) Key input from stakeholders (internal and external) you consulted.
e) Evaluation of current risk control options. Identify any gaps between current status and required controls.
Task 2.2 Risk Analysis Tools
Use the relevant Risk Assessment tools to analyse/ evaluate the WHS risks you identified.
a) Provide a risk register that identifies hazards that relate to 5 core on-site tasks.
b) Determine the level of risk, by clearly identifying the probability and impact of the hazards.
c) Specify the control measures, and where they sit on the hierarchy of control scale.
d) Note any limitations of the risk assessment tools and processes you used.
Task 2.3 Monitoring Exercise
Refer to the incident described in the report over the page, which has taken place 6 months after your WHS Risk Management System was implemented. It is an actual workplace injury, with the personal details changed. The incident was life-threatening and traumatic for all concerned.
a) Complete the “Recommended Preventive Action” section in the Incident Report, based on the Positive Safety Culture actions set out in Task 1.2 (Assessment 1).
b) Reflect on the success of the risk control methods you recommended in your Risk Assessment (Task 2.1):
• Make any continuous improvement recommendations to current practices, in light of this incident.
• Document the timeframes to be applied to any rectification process, and who is accountable.
c) On the template on the last page, complete the Tool Box Talk meeting minutes in relation to this incident.
