In this module you will conduct a piece of investigative quantitative, qualitative or mixed method research in a specialized area of biomedical science which may be laboratory or non-laboratory based. You will be expected to demonstrate the skills required to carry out a research project based on an academic and technical understanding of the topic. You are expected to demonstrate an ability to work independently and show high levels of  organizational skills. In demonstrating your academic and practical ability you must also show awareness of issues of health and safety, ethical considerations and appropriate interaction with other students and staff. You must demonstrate presentation skills and a critical analysis of their data with respect to a detailed appreciation of the current literature and present this in an appropriately structured thesis and an oral poster presentation.
Teaching and Learning
This module will consist of self-directed practical sessions or surveys, literature searches, and frequent tutorials with the project supervisor(s). You will be guided in the generic skills required to produce and design a research plan and literature survey in small group-based meetings with your supervisor. Various data presentation packages will be used as well as statistical packages and bioinformatics tools if relevant. You will be expected to undertakewide reading round the subject matter to produce an in-depth study of a self-searched topic.Please also note that you must arrange and attend regular meetings with your supervisor to ensure a smooth running research project. Guidelines on time distribution of time for this module: A module is supposed to occupy you for about 400 hours in total. Obviously some of you will spend more than this and others possibly a little less. It depends on how much you know from previous studies, the effectiveness of your study skills and how well you want to do in the module.
Colour should be used for graphs/ diagrams etc.
Any diagrams, graphs etc which are of unusual format should be scanned for inclusion into your electronic thesis
Your thesis needs to be an originally written piece of work.
All data generated by your project may be scrutinised by your supervisor. Generation of false data is scientific fraud and will be treated as academic misconduct.
