Highlights
The purpose of this assignment is for you to describe and analyse your approach to social work practice. As a developing practitioner, you are learning about the knowledge, skills and values that support your practice. Your approach to practice is made up of a set of beliefs and assumptions about how and why people encounter
challenges in contemporary society, how people and communities can change or develop, and what workers can do to assist this change or development. Your approach to practice may comprise several approaches, depending on the demands of the situation, or you may be quite specialised and use one particular approach.
In your assignment you are expected to address the following:
Please structure your assignment as an essay, including an introduction, conclusion and reference list. You may use headings. You should draw on a wide range of knowledge to evidence your arguments, including academic literature and research, organisational documents, and your own reflection on your personal observations and experiences.
Appropriate research methods
Choosing a research method depends on a number of factors including: previous research on your topic, your research question(s), and what is possible within your placement setting. Your research project should be small in scale so that it is achievable within the placement timeframe and the available resources. The topic of your research should be negotiated between yourself and the research tutor and discussed with your university liaison tutor. Details of the project should be provided in your learning plan. Approval of your topic and proposed project is provided by the research tutor.
We recommend that the research does not involve primary data collection. Rather, we recommend that the study involve secondary research (e.g. content analysis of public documents, analysing data from confidential agency records, or secondary analysis of an existing research dataset) or a literature review (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, critical interpretive synthesis review). The latter is especially important in the development of skills in evidence-informed social work practice.
We do recognise that on some occasions it may be desirable to conduct small-scale primary research if this meets the needs of the placement agency. Such methods may include observation, survey, qualitative interviews or focus groups. This research should be conducted with agency workers or other workers within the sector. Primary research methods should not be used with clients or other vulnerable groups. Evidence that he agency has approved your research must be included in the appendices of your report, by way of email or letter.
There may be other methods suitable for your topic – please discuss these with the research project tutor. Please make use of the resources provided in WEL92003 Research for Social Work (e.g. study guide, text book, readings) in developing your research project and preparing your report.
Support for completing the research project and writing the report
The research tutor is responsible for providing you with support in the development and completion of your research project and in writing the report. Your field education learning plan should contain details about your proposed research project.. The research tutor will indicate at this point if an individual ethics application is required to be submitted before the project can be approved (see below). Online resources will be made available to support completion of the project, including discussion boards and collaborate sessions. The research tutor will also be available for individual consultation on the proposed project.
