Highlights
Introductions
The learning theories that underpin this teaching plan are Knowles Adult Learning Theory, Constructivism Theory, and Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction, with principles from these theories being utilised to help design the teaching plan, and guide the creation of the learning outcomes, teaching and learning strategies, and assessment of learning. Firstly, Knowles theory emphasises that adult learners are self-directed, have real life experience that they draw upon as a resource, and are most interested in learning subjects that have an immediate impact on their job (Knowles, 1978; Zepeda et al., 2014). In the introduction the outcomes of the session are clearly identified, and discussion around previous experience with nasogastric tubes is encouraged, in order to put the proposed learning into context for the students and to promote optimal engagement from them.
