AIMS
This module aims to give students the opportunity to demonstrate independent learning with supervision from an academic tutor and integrate theory and practice by systematically planning a project.
For the purpose of the module, students must focus the desk-based project on the creation of a comprehensive business proposal for a new service, intervention, service improvement, innovation or technology that aims to benefit population health and wellbeing or is for the benefit of patient/service user care or employee welfare. Remember this is a desk-based project and NOT a proposal for an empirical study that requires you to collect primary data.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:
Module Content
This module requires students to primarily be self-directed and independent in their study. There is no precise indicative content or scheme of work for the module and this will be dependent on the nature of the project. This will be agreed between each student and their project supervisor. The aim of the module is to allow each student to analyse a health care management issue, using a range of high-level management knowledge, theory and skills. It will demonstrate use of evidence-based methods to undertake a systematized literature review that informs a viable service improvement and implementation plan, framed as a business proposal, to produce a viable solution. For the systematized literature review part of the proposal, each student will need to submit a CU ethics application, reviewed and approved by their allocated project supervisor. Irrespective of the organisation to which this proposal is being pitched, students will demonstrate the use of appropriate subject-specific research methods for searching and critical appraising the evidence, demonstrating analysis of the issue(s) and informing the proposed solution(s), identifying appropriate outcomes and recommending realistic and viable actions/solutions to the achieve them.
The focus of the project will have relevance to the individual student’s personal interest, but also consider the ethics of addressing the management issue and benefits of the proposed solutionHowever, there are several important factors which influence choice of topic and design of the project, including availability of resources, time and access to relevant information. The project supervisor and/or module leader will offer consultation and advice in establishing a coherent and feasible approach to the project and will continue to offer support throughout the process. This Module Guide should be read in conjunction with the document, 7053SOH Project Guidelines, which provides further details of the requirements for your project.
Teaching and Learning
This module demands a high degree of student involvement, planning, self-management and independent study. It also requires creative and reflective thinking on relationships between topics.Students are supported through individual and group supervision with academic staff. The choice of management topic is not prescribed and should reflect the student’s own responsibilities and interest. However, there are several important factors which influence choice of topic and design which include availability of resources, time and access to relevant information. The tutor will offer consultation and advice in establishing a coherent and feasible approach to the project and will continue to offer support throughout the process.
Selecting your Project
The focus of the Management Project (General) for 7053SOH is to systematically plan and focus in depth on the creation of a comprehensive business proposal for a new service, intervention, service improvement, innovation or technology that aims to address a specific health care management problem, either (1) to benefit patient/service user care or (2) employee welfare. The starting point in identifying the focus for your project must be the identification and critical analysis of a health care management problem, rather than starting with the solution.
All projects must consider the ethical implications and solutions proposed should aim to benefit the population/ customers/ service users of the organisation or staff employed by that organisation. It is important to identify possible areas for the project early and to discuss these with your project supervisor, if you are unsure about the relevance or viability in the setting you have identified.
