Highlights
Design for durability
The objective is the design for durability of three structural members of a girder Bridge according to AS5100.5. Design for durability will include specification of concrete (concrete characteristic compressive strength and mix design, minimum curing duration) and concrete cover for the three structural reinforced concrete members to satisfy the 100 years service life. The three reinforced concrete members to be designed for durability are:
1. Foundations: reinforced concrete footings
2. Bridge piers: reinforced concrete columns
3. Bridge deck: reinforced concrete top-slab
Location on the bridge: Mackay, QLD
The girder bridge is to be built over a mangrove in Mackay, QLD. The foundations are permanently submerged in sea water, but the reinforced concrete columns of the bridge piers are in tidal exposure condition.
Question
For each structural member, determine according to AS5100.5 requirements:
The exposure classification. - The minimum concrete characteristic compressive strength.
The minimum cementitious materials content in concrete per m3 .
The minimum GGBFS content (fly ash or silica fume are not available for this project).
The minimum concrete cover.
The minimum concrete curing duration.
