Highlights
Task
Students will review two videos, each featuring a simulated prison environment developed through the video game Prison Architect. The videos include relevant excerpts and textual signposts to help orient the viewer to what is happening.
Although each video includes some narrative guidance about what is occurring, it is expected that students will make further observations about unnoted conditions (based upon visible factors). For example, students may note the physical features of the simulated prison, considering how the environments in different generations of carceral design influence inmate and staff experiences. Students should not,
however, manufacture information about the simulated prison or persons, instead basing their analysis and composition on observable phenomena.
The two simulations — one featuring positive prisoner outcomes and one featuring negative prisoner outcomes — are dramatic representations (simplifications and amplifications) of complex real-world scenarios. The decision-making
featured in each simulation was purposively pursued so that it would lead to the extreme outcomes observed. Students are expected to understand that the simulations are based on realistic prison dynamics, even though they are represented as somewhat comical cartoon renderings in the videos.
ASSESSMENT CONTENT
For each prison simulation, students will craft a 750-word short essay that contains three components: (1) a brief description of the events that unfolded and the outcome that resulted,
(2) an analysis of the circumstances that led to those events and that outcome, and (3) an overview and application of the penological theories and research evidence that accounts for those events and that outcome.
It is anticipated that students will largely have similar descriptions about the events observed in the simulation videos, although the observations of what incited or facilitated.
