Create A Series Of Simple Thematic Maps To Answer A Question

A Local Council Project Aims To Develop An Urban Information System To Store In Detail Important Data On The Local Built Environment And To Conduct A Land Use Pattern Analysis. In This Assessment 2:

• Create A Geodatabase Using Georeferenced Aerial Photographs To Generate And To Store Systematically Important Data For A Selected Residential Neighbourhood.
• Prepare A Series Of Thematic Maps To Generate New Data And An Integrated Thematic Map On Spatial Land Use Distribution Considering Built Roof Areas Of Houses, Road, Paved Pathways, Tree Canopy, Lawn And Other Relevant Land Use Areas.
• Calculate Dwelling Density And Population Density Per Hectare; Display On A Map Categorisation Of Different Parcels Sizes And Prepare A Map Showing Distribution Of A Parcel Area Category That Contains Maximum Number Of Parcels.
• Provide Recommendations Based On Simple Spatial Analysis In A Report.

In This Assignment 2, Students Will Conduct Further Spatial Analysis Of Data; Construct A Series Of Simple Thematic Maps Using GIS Analysis Tools And Will Provide Recommendations. The Georeferenced Aerial Photograph And Site Boundaries Data Will Be Available For This Assessment. You Have To Create The Feature Datasets According To Categories And Organise Relevant Feature Classes Such As Built Up Roof Areas, Road, Paved Pathways, Tree Canopy, Other Relevant Land Use Areas And Parcel Boundaries Under Relevant Feature Datasets (Please Refer To Tutorial 2 On Module 2: ‘Geodatabases’ And ‘Editing Landuse Example’). The Purpose Of This Assessment Task Is To Develop Competencies In Creating Geodatabases (One Of The Most Important Aspects Of Storing And Retrieving Data Systematically), Visualisation And Spatial Analysis, Creating New Data For Preparing An Urban Information Database, Spatial Mapping With Qualities Of A Good Map (Please Refer To Tutorial 1 On ‘Basic Concepts Of GIS’ And Spatial Mapping Lecture In Module 1 Class).

Please Note That There Are 4 Options Or 4 Different Residential Neighbourhoods In Assessment 2 Data. Please Select Only 1 Out Of The 4 Options For Assessment 2. There Is No Need To Do All The Options.

Submission Requirements

Assessment 2 Should Be Submitted As A Single PDF Report Of 1500 Words With All The Maps, Screen Capture And Charts And Tables Prepared On The UTS Canvas Within Due Date. The Requirements Are Detailed Below.

  1. A Screen Capture Of The New Geodatabase Created In ArcCatalog And The New Geodatabase Expanded Showing All The Feature Datasets And Feature Classes Within Feature Datasets Created For The Selected Residential Neighbourhood In The Report.

  2. Following Three Maps (Minimum Requirements) And Any Additional Maps Prepared With All Good Map Requirements In The Report.
    • Land Use Distribution In Different Categories In The Selected Option;
    • Spatial Distribution Of Parcels By Size Categories;
    • Distribution Of A Selected Parcel Category That Contains Maximum Number Of Parcels;

  3. A Pie Chart Showing Percentages Of Land Use Or Parcel Distribution And A Table On Land Use Distribution Should Be Added For The Selected Site;

  4. Dwelling Density And Population Density Per Hectare For The Selected Residential Neighbourhood;

  5. Context And Important Observations While Conducting The Simple Spatial Analysis Using GIS Methods;

  6. Recommendations Should Include:
    • How To Improve Planning And Property Outcomes; Development Initiatives That Increase Property Prices; Environmental Sustainability Benefits, For Example, Increasing Tree Canopy Cover, Infill Housing, Densification Or Continue Existing Etc. And Other Property Related Relevant Recommendations;

  7. Please Note That Maps, Tables And References Will Not Be Counted Within The Word Limit.

  8. Please Upload The Report Name Subject Number_A2_Surname_Student ID On The UTS Canvas.

Assessment Requirements

This assessment requires students to develop an urban spatial information database and perform simple spatial analysis using GIS tools for a selected residential neighbourhood (choosing only one of the four provided options). Students must create a geodatabase using georeferenced aerial photographs and systematically organize feature datasets such as:

  • Built-up roof areas

  • Roads and paved pathways

  • Tree canopy and lawn areas

  • Other relevant land-use features

  • Parcel boundaries

Students must then prepare a series of thematic maps and conduct spatial analysis to understand land-use patterns and parcel characteristics.

The key tasks include:

  • Creating and organizing feature datasets in a structured geodatabase

  • Preparing thematic maps showing:

    • land-use distribution

    • parcel size categorisation

    • parcel category containing the maximum number of parcels

  • Calculating dwelling density and population density per hectare

  • Preparing a pie chart and table showing land-use or parcel distribution

  • Providing planning and property-related recommendations

  • Presenting findings in a 1500-word PDF report with maps, charts, screen captures, and tables

Maps, tables, and references are not counted in the word limit.

The report must also include:

  • Context and observations from spatial analysis

  • Interpretation of land-use trends

  • Evidence-based planning recommendations such as:

    • densification

    • infill housing

    • environmental sustainability improvements

    • increased tree canopy cover

    • initiatives that enhance property value
